The Elementary Music Department is the place where children in 4K through fourth grade can experiment with instrumental and vocal music and begin to find their God-given gifts. We cover the basics of music by studying rhythm, notation and harmony and we put what we've learned into practice by performing for various programs throughout the year. Beginning in kindergarten, each student has a chance to play various rhythm and instruments to build their singing skills and musical knowledge. Children's books are used to set story lines for songs that we create together in class, allowing us to help build vocabulary along with musical skills. For third and fourth graders, this basic instruction culminates in learning to play the recorder and more advanced instruments in the fall as well as the production of a musical in the spring that incorporates singing, acting and choreography. The goal of this age group is to provide a foundation that will help each student easily transition either to band or the choral music department in the fifth grade.
