Fifth Grade

BIBLE (Positive Action for Christ)

Possessing the Land - The Bible course includes prayer and weekly Scripture memorization.  The students’ study of God’s Word consists of stories about creation; Noah and the flood; Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; Joseph; the life of Moses; Joshua; Judges; Ruth; Jesus’ earthly ministry; and the life of Paul.  Spiritual life applications are also included in each lesson.  Students also attend weekly chapel services.

ENGLISH (ABEKA)

As well as providing a thorough review of capitalization, punctuation, and the parts of speech, ABEKA’s God’s Gift of Language B deepens students’ knowledge of grammar and increases their practical skills. Students are introduced to the four main types of complements: direct objects, indirect objects, predicate nouns, and predicate adjectives. They also add prepositional phrases and complements to their diagramming skills.  Writing skills will soar as students learn to write effective topic sentences and paragraphs and to use transitional words.  Skills learned in outlining, note taking, and preparing a bibliography will aid students in writing an encyclopedia report and the library research report. A literature-based unit of study of the first five books of The Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis forms the core of the teaching of reading.  With the subject matter promoting motivation, there is an emphasis on vocabulary, oral reading, literal comprehension and critical thinking skills.  Creative opportunities are offered through projects and reports.  Additional comprehension practice is provided with Read and Think Skill Sheets.

HISTORY (ABEKA)

The history and geography of the Eastern Hemisphere is studied comprehensively, including The Middle East, Asia, Africa, Europe, Australia and Oceania.  In addition, a study of current events throughout the year provides application of historical facts and concepts.  Each student conducts an in-depth study of one nation by completing a Nation Notebook.

MATH (SAXON)

Saxon Math's integrated and distributed instructional plan helps all students achieve mastery of the standards by building in TIME to learn, TIME to process, and TIME to practice.

This course reinforces and builds foundational concepts, supplies real world problem solving and applications, and teaches students to communicate mathematically.

SCIENCE (ACSI-Purposeful Design)

This course is an engaging hands-on program that encourages students to: acquire new information, gain proficiency in research, work collaboratively with other students, think critically, use scientific tools, do measurements, solve problems, and evaluate results. Life science, physical science, earth and space science, and the human body are all studied with an emphasis on experimentation and observation.
