Band at cfa Academy is taught in daily scheduled classes as a regular part of the school day. Band is introduced to fifth graders and sixth graders in beginning band with hopes of them continuing on into the Middle School and High School Band program. Having a comprehensive Music Education involves exposing students to a wide variety of musical concepts and to that end, students will learn much more than how to play an instrument, students will also learn the following components:
Music Theory (Reading, writing, rhythm studies and understanding terminology that dictates how music should be played)
Aural Skills (Recognizing major and minor tonalities, concepts of harmony and harmonic structure)
Music History (Composer biographical info, historical and cultural relevance and the significance of music during certain periods)
Music Appreciation (Exposure to different styles and genres of music, including popular and sacred music)
Critical-Thinking Skills
Middle School and High School Band students will have the opportunity to experience Concert Band, Jazz Band and Pep Band literature. Advanced Band students may have additional opportunities to participate in All-County Honors Band, All-District Honors Band and All-State Honors bands. In addition to these school opportunities, we have also had students participate in summer music camps at UNC-Greensboro and Appalachian State University. Opportunities for travel and competitions with the band are also a part of the Middle and High School Band experience. Students perform in concerts for a grade at least twice a year in addition to other school activities that involve the Bands of cfa Academy.
